Summary of Each DJI Drone

Below we give a brief summary and pros and cons of each DJI camera drone. Remember, you can compare all DJI camera drones and all other manufacturers on our camera drone comparison tool.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro

Image
dji mavic 2 pro camera drone

The Mavic 2 Pro has been out a number of years now and can be bought second hand for considerably less than it's original RRP price.

It is a professional grade camera drone with a number of good and bad qualities.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro Positives

It is a folding camera drone, which means it can be made smaller, simply by folding it's arms in.

It has a fantastic 1" image sensor, the largest used on any DJI consumer camera drone.

It has great features, a fast top speed and professional aerial videography and photo features.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro Cons

It is one of the larger size folding camera drones and weighs nearly 1kg, at 907grams in total with its battery, ready to fly.

It's hard to get the best footage out of it, even though it takes amazing footage, you have to be ready to edit it to get the most out of it compared to other drones.

DJI Mavic 2 Zoom

Image
dji mavic 2 zoom camera drone

Similar to the Mavic 2 Pro in looks, it has some of the same features but an entirely different camera setup, as this is made for zooming in on an area from afar.

DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Pros

It is the only DJI drone which is capable of optical zooming, the rest all rely on digital zoom which immediately ruins your footage as soon as you use it.

Shares some other great features as the DJI Mavic 2 Pro.

Can be bought for much less than the RRP second hand or refurbished.

DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Cons

It uses a smaller image sensor size of 1/2.3" compared to the 1" of the Mavic 2 Pro, this means it's under half the size of its sister drone the M2P and won't be as good in low light situations.

DJI Mavic Air 2

Image
dji mavic air 2 camera drone

Brand new for 2020, an incredible camera drone with a lot of bells and whistles, far too many to go through now, but here are a couple of positives and negatives of this camera drone.

DJI Mavic Air 2 Positives

Middle of the road in terms of weight and size, bigger than the Mavic Mini but also noticeably smaller than the Mavic 2 Pro range.

Has a slightly larger than normal image sensor size at 1/2" and uses the Sony IMX 586 which is capable of 4K at 60fps, not many camera drones are capable of those frame rates at that resolution.

Some of the best transmission distance at 10km and obstacle avoidance for a camera drone is great, for a camera drone that doesn't particularly focus on this feature, like the Skydio 2 does.

DJI Mavic Air 2 Negatives

The camera drone has very few negatives, one being that you have to have an iPhone or latest Android device to be able to control the drone. This is the same for all DJI drones though.

The second is the price, at nearly $1000 brand new with the fly more package, it's not cheap compared to some other manufacturer drones, such as the Fimi X8 SE 2020 which has only a couple less features but is almost half the price.

It may also have far too many features for you that you may never use. It has something for everyone which makes it a fantastic camera drone overall but you're paying for things you may never use.

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2

Image
dji phantom 4 pro v2 camera drone

A professional consumer camera drone, bulkier than others but has some serious features that make for a great DJI drone if you don't mind the lack of portability.

DJI Phantom Pro 4 V2 Pros

Only one of two DJI drones which use a larger 1" inch sized image sensor, this means it's one of the best for low light video and photography in their range.

Handles high winds great, has a long flight time considering it's a couple of years old now and is a very impressive camera drone.

DJI Phantom Pro 4 V3 Cons

It is bulky, large, heavy and not portable at all, this would be impossible to travel with unless you had lot of other photography gear and you were doing an expedition, even then we wouldn't recommend it.

Like the Mavic 2 Pro drones, you have to work a little harder to get more out of the camera as it has less auto features than the other consumer camera drones on the market that are doing a lot for you to make the photos and videos better.

DJI Mavic Mini

Image
dji mavic mini drone

The DJI Mavic Mini is without a doubt, one of the best camera drones on the market, it doesn't have the most features or the longest battery life, but it has just enough for nearly most camera drone enthusiasts and aerial photographers and weighs only 249grams.

DJI Mavic Mini Pros

It weigh just 249grams, making it the lightest of any DJI drone on the market, this makes it the most portable and pocketable camera drone on the market for those serious about photography and videography.

You still get a 3-axis gimbal which supports the camera and smooths out the footage as well as a decent 30 minute flight time from the battery.

It is one of the most affordable in the DJI range of camera drones which also means cheaper accessories, spare batteries and so on.

DJI Mavic Mini Cons

Because of it's size and weight, it isn't as good in high winds, which means no flying sometimes when the wind picks up.

It also has zero obstacle avoidance so all your flights must be manually controlled and it's up to you to keep it out of harms way so that you don't crash.

DJI Mavic Air Camera Drone

Image
dji mavic air camera drone

The DJI Mavic Air still makes for a fantastic camera drone, it has a decent features, even in 2020 and with the Mavic Air 2 out but for a fraction of the price. It's also smaller than the Mavic Air 2.

DJI Mavic Air Pros

It is a small and lightweight camera drone, with folding arms, means it's great for travelling and portability.

It is one of the fastest charging camera drones in the DJI range at less than an hour to fully charge the battery.

DJI Mavic Air Cons

It is nearly 3 years old now and shows this in terms of flight times of just over 20 minutes and far less photo and video features compared to other newer DJI drones.

DJI Spark Camera Drone

Image
dji spark camera drone

The DJI Spark is the original mini or micro camera drone by DJI. It doesn't have folding arms like others but is still a great little drone for aerial photography and videography as some people still making the most of it's features years after its launch.

DJI Spark Pros

It is tiny, although it doesn't have folding arms, it is pocketable in a large shirt pocket or side pocket of a backpack. It's only a slightly larger than the Mavic Mini when that has it's arms folded in. So when flying, it's actually the smallest of the DJI camera drone range.

You can pick them up very cheap now refurbished or second hand, if you're looking to get in to aerial photography this is still a good buy!

DJI Spark Cons

It's battery life is tiny, less than half of most other DJI camera drones, at 16 minutes in total, which is more or less 12 minutes usable flying time.

It only has a 2-axis gimbal, if you're turning and moving the camera drone in different directions you will notice wobble and shakes. If flying in straight lines though or tripod mode which is still in the air, it will still produce fantastic smooth quality videos. You just have to learn it's limitations and work around that with your shots.

Comparing Features on the DJI Drones

Here we look at each and every feature and compare them across the entire DJI Drone range.

DJI Drone Price Comparison

DJI have a number of drones, ranging from $399 USD all the way up to $1999 depending on the model.

At the cheaper end of the scale you have the DJI Spark which can be bought refurbished or second hand for around $399.

At the other end of the spectrum You have the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2 which is just under $2000 USD.

DJI Drone Release Dates

The release dates for the latest DJI camera drones are as far back as 3 and half years ago to some that were recently released in 2020.

The DJI Mavic Air 2 was the latest release which was launched in mid 2020 around the world.

The DJI Spark is the oldest camera drone in the DJI range that we compare, being nearly 3 years old.

DJI Drone Diagonal Distance Comparison

In terms of size, diagonally, the smallest DJI drone is the DJI Spark at 170mm diagonally (with folding arms open).

With the largest, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro coming in at 354mm, twice the size diagonally compared to the smallest DJI drone.

DJI Drones Dimension Comparisons

In terms of actual size, dimension and volume, there are huge differences between the DJI drone range.

The volume and dimensions are compared when the drones are ready to fly, with their arms unfolded, measured from all four motors and in terms of length, width and height.

The smallest is the DJI Mavic Mini at 654cm³ in volume and three dimensional space, which is the smallest of the DJI camera drone range.

The largest is the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2 which is 28543cm³ in size, a tremendous 40x bigger in size. You could literally fit the DJI Mavic Mini in place of the camera and gimbal on the Phantom 4 V2 alone. This shows how big this camera drone is and how small the Mavic Mini is.

DJI Drone Controller Comparison

The DJI Drone range has a number of different drone controller types, most use smart phones which attach to a controller you get with the drone. Make sure to check that yours is compatible with the DJI apps so that you can fly the drones.

You can use your smart phone which attaches to the remote controller device on most DJI drones.

The smallest comes with the Mavic Mini an one of the largest is with the DJI Mavic Air 2.

You can use a more professional controller with the Mavic 2 Pro camera drones which have an in-built screen and are much larger than the other controller devices.

DJI Drone Weight Comparison

There are huge differences in terms of weight too, with the smallest camera drone weighing in at 249 grams, obviously this is the DJI Mavic Mini.

The heaviest of the bunch is the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2 at 1375grams, just over 6 times heavier than the lightest, the Mavic Mini.

DJI Drone Physical Feature Comparisons

Nearly all of the DJI Camera Drones have folding arms and can be packed away smaller for portability.

There are currently two DJI Drones which do not have this feature, they are the tiny DJI Spark and the much larger professional DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2 camera drone.

Even though they don't fold their arms in, they are both entirely different types of drones, with the Spark aimed at portability due to it's tiny size and the Phantom to more professional work and higher wind speeds.

DJI Drone Max Speed Comparison

The max speed of a DJI Drone is 72kmh, which is 26kmh faster than the slowest DJI camera drone.

The camera drone with the fastest speed through the air is shared by three DJI drones, the DJI Phantom Pro 4 V2, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom can all top out at 72kmh.

The Mavic Air range come in just slightly under this at 68kmh top speeds.

The slowest, being the Mavic Mini is capable of 46kmh top speed and is considerably slower than all the other DJI drones other than the Spark which has a similar top speed at 50kmh.

DJI Drone Max Wind Speed

If you're looking for a DJI Drone which can handle high wind speeds, there are four drones you should be looking at.

The Mavic 2 and Mavic Air range all have a top wind speed tolerance of around 38kmh with the Phantom Pro 4 V2 just a little behind at 36kmh max wind speed tolerance.

If you film in windy areas, near the sea or mountainous terrain, these four have to be on your list of choices.

DJI Drone Transmission Distance Comparison

Are you planning on flying your drones really far? Or not too bothered about how far you can go? There are some big differences between the smallest and longest transmission distance between the DJI camera drones.

At the bottom of the table you have the DJI Spark which has a 2km transmission distance in perfect conditions and without any interference.

At the other end, you have the DJI Mavic Air and Mavic Air 2 which have incredible transmission distances of up to 10km.

DJI Drone Flight Time Comparison

Maybe you're looking to fly as long as you can on one battery? That is how we fly, due to the batteries being the heaviest part of a camera drone, we limit our use of them to just one or two on a trip and get the most out of them. This is especially important when travelling and bringing all your camera drone gear and equipment in a backpack with you.

With this in mind, you want to be able to fly as long as you can off of one battery and there is a huge difference in the flight time.

The lower end of flight time you get just 16 minutes with the DJI Spark and 21 minutes with the DJI Mavic Air. What this means is you get more like 10-12 minutes with the Spark and 15 minutes with the DJI Mavic Air as you have to turn the drones on, set them up, change camera settings as you take off and get the drone in the air.

At the other end, DJI now sell camera drones with incredible flight times, with all other DJI drones capable of at least 30 minutes.

The DJI Mavic Mini has a surprising 30 minute flight time considering how small it's batteries are.

The DJI Mavic Air 2 beats all other DJI drones though by 4 minutes and can fly for up to 34 minutes on one battery in ideal conditions.

DJI Drone Noise Level Comparison

This is a very important feature for us when we are flying and one that may be overlooked quite often. If taking off in busy places with people around, you want it to be as quiet as you can.

The noise level of each DJI Drone is similar, but the winner and quietest DJI camera drone is the Mavic Pro Platinum with a noise level of just 66 decibels.

Most other DJI drones are similar in their noise level when taking off at around 74 to 79 decibles, with the Mavic Mini coming in second quietest and the original Mavic Air being the loudest at 79db.

DJI Drone Image Sensor Comparison

If the image quality is of the most importance to you when flying a camera drone, there are some big differences between the DJI drones.

Not every single image sensor is known on all the DJI drones but a few are.

They range from 1/2.3" through to 1" in size which is 7.6mm diagonally for the 1/2.3" image sensors and 15.86mm for the 1" sensors.

The two largest are the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2 and the DJI Mavic 2 Pro which both have a 1 inch image sensor size which means they are hands down better for low light situations mongst other shot types.

The rest all use a 1/2.3" image sensor size other than the Mavic Air 2 which has a 1/2" (half inch) image sensor size which equates to 8mm diagonally. This is a slight improvement on the rest and the image sensor it uses is the Sony IMX586 which is a phenomenal image sensor, as seen in the Autel Evo II too.

It means the Mavic Air 2 is capable of 4k video recording at 60fps and insanely large photos in JPG format at 48mp, amongst other features.

DJI Drone Photo Feature Comparison

There are many different features in the DJI drone range, from quick shots, raw photos and more. But the camera drone with the most is the Mavic Air 2 which was released earlier this year.

It has improved hyperlapse, waypoint and timelapse photography modes, which beat all other DJI drones in terms of photography features.

You can also take huge 48mp photos if you are interested in doing large prints, this camera takes the biggest photos of any other DJI drone without stitching them together in post like you would with other camera drones.

DJI Drone Video Feature Comparison

The DJI Mavic Air 2 wins in this department too, with some incredible videography features. It is capable of slow motion at 4K with 60fps but in 1080p it is capable of 240fps video recording frame rates, some of the slowest frame rates of any camera drone in high definition 1080p.

You can also record in d-cinelike with this drone, which is also available on the Mavic 2 Pro (shoots d-log) drones and the Phantom 4 V2. If you're interested in shooting video and want to colour grade your own footage, these are the four camera drones to look at.

DJI Drone Flight Mode Comparison

The Mavic Air 2 has some of the most advanced flight modes from any DJI drone as well, capable of obstacle avoidance unlike any other DJI camera drone as well as many smart shooting modes.

It has active track which is an upgrade from the original Mavic Air and paired with obstacle avoidance can make for some great footage.

DJI Drone Obstacle Avoidance Comparison

As mentioned above, the Mavic Air 2 has the best obstacle avoidance of any DJI drone, it has more sensors and can be seen below compared to the Skydio 2.
