Which Camera Drones Can Fly in the Highest Winds

Which Camera Drones Can Fly in the Highest Winds

If you're looking for a camera drone that can withstand the highest winds for your aerial photography, we have a list that should help you below.

No matter where you are in the world, you'll probably be checking the weather forecast and especially how fast the wind will be, to see whether you can fly your drone and get the shot you're after.

You can also see which aerial photography drones are good in high winds on our drone discovery page. We add the latest camera and film making drones to the discovery tool with all of their specs so you can filter, sort and compare camera drones to find the right drone for you, based on features you want.

Which Aerial Photography Drones Handle Best in High Winds

One thing to remember is that the bigger the drone, the better it can handle in high winds. They may not advertise that they can handle higher wind speeds, but with their size they should be able to hold position better.

A heavier drone means it's harder for the wind moving to move that object. Now if you imagine something like the DJI Mavic Mini, which is very small, they handle poorly in high winds and shouldn't be taken out in anything over 10-15mph winds as gusts any faster may take the drone away from you.

If you're in to mountainous terrain, getting out in to the wilderness, doing landscape photography or even coastal work, you're bound to find higher winds than usual.

Most of our work is done in the mountains and coastal regions so we're always checking for storms and that is why we choose our drones carefully when heading out and working with what the weather will do.

Quick Tips for Flying in High Winds

We would recommend flying the drone for the photo or video as quick as you can so that you have as much battery as possible when making the shot.

We always aim to fly in to the wind for the shot, so that the drone returns to us, as the battery depletes, it means it has to work less on the return as it uses the wind to get back to you and where the drone took off from on the ground.

If you really must fly in high winds, make sure you can access all of the ground around you, if the drone does get taken away by a big gust of wind, then you can head in that direction and hopefully find it on the ground and in one piece. If you are surrounded by water, or a mountainous area with trees, you may struggle to retrieve it.

Keep the drone as close to you as you can, do not send it hundreds of metres away, even in to the wind, try to be within tens of metres of the shot you are looking for and down wind from where the drone is heading just in case something goes wrong.

Finally, would highly recommend getting an anemometer, which is a hand held mini wind speed gauge. With this, you can see the current wind speed and then work out from that what it will be higher up. As a rule of thumb it will always be at least 10-15kmh windier even just 20-50 metres above your head.

Which Drones Are Best in High Winds

Here is a complete list which has all of the camera drones available today for photography and film making and is sorted by how much wind they can fly in.

From the list below you can see that there are two high flyers and aerial photography drones that do very well in high winds.

Parrot Anafi and Xiaomi Fimi X8 SE 2020 Can Fly in the Strongest Winds

If you're looking for a drone which is capable of beating the weather and staying up in the air longer than any other camera drone, then these two drones are what you should be looking at.

The Parrot Anafi and Xiaomi Fimi X8 SE 2020 can fly in winds of up to 50kmh, which is just over 31mph.

They are capable of flying, according to their manufacturers ratings in winds more than 10kmh faster than the third best film making drone.

Skydio 2 is the Third Best Camera Drone in High Winds

If you want maneuverability and great control in high winds, a drone you can trust, the Skydio 2 is the drone for you. A different offering than the others as it's aimed at tracking more than manual control, but it's great to know that if you don't have eyes on this drone, it should still be able to keep up with you even in high winds.

After these 3 aerial photography drones come 4 drones vying for your attention.

  • DJI Mavic Air
  • DJI Mavic Air 2
  • DJI Mavic 2 Pro
  • DJI Mavic 2 Zoom

are all capable of being out in high winds as well, managing winds and gusts of up to 38kmh, which is just under 24mph wind speeds.

We certainly wouldn't want to take them out in anything more than this, but if the shot must be made, you can be safe knowing that they can all work in conditions and wind speeds close to those shown.
